Latest Version of NGINX Now Includes SPDY/3.1 To Speed Up Web Browsing

NGINX Inc., the high performance Web company, today announced support for the SPDY/3.1 protocol in the latest iteration of NGINX version 1.5.10. Available immediately, SPDY/3.1 is the latest iteration of the SPDY protocol and is supported in the core NGINX product. SPDY provides exciting capabilities for Web developers and service providers building responsive, high performance websites.

NGINX’s popular Web server software was recently named the most popular Web server among the Web’s 1,000 busiest sites, and is now the number two Web server overall according to w3techs December report. Consequently, there is significant demand to support state-of-the-art performance enhancing technologies such as SPDY from the NGINX community, and to achieve the broadest compatibility with enhancements in client applications. In the latest version of NGINX 1.5.10, SPDY/3.1 will reduce the latency incurred by concurrent connections, increase performance and security of applications and minimize Web load times.

Automattic and MaxCDN were the co-sponsors of this project.

“We are excited to work with NGINX, Inc. again to bring SPDY/3.1 support to the NGINX community,” said Barry Abrahamson, Chief Systems Wrangler at Automattic. “SPDY and NGINX are both critical to our infrastructure and integral to our plans to encrypt the vast majority of our Web traffic by the end of 2014. Since sponsoring the initial NGINX/SPDY integration in 2012, we continue to shift more of our traffic from HTTP to SPDY and are able to offer our users better security and performance as a result.”

“We are thrilled to be apart of the SPDY 3.1 implementation in NGINX and contributing to making the Web faster. We look forward to delivering these speed improvements to our customers,” said David Archibald, Director of Operations at MaxCDN.

Support for SPDY/3.1 represents an important step to improve on the current HTTP standard. As more and more of a website or service’s content and communications are transmitted over HTTP, high performance in the face of demanding, high-concurrency workloads has become more and more critical. SPDY reduces Web page load time by optimizing the way HTTP requests are sent in order to prioritize and multiplex the transfer of resources.

“We are proud to upgrade SPDY to version 3.1, and we are thankful to Automattic and MaxCDN for sponsoring this work,” said Gus Robertson, CEO of NGINX, Inc. “Since 2013, SPDY has been a core component of NGINX and the latest version provides our open source user base with a much requested way to handle high traffic with the most modern and cutting edge tools available. It further demonstrates our commitment to continue innovating for our open source users.”

“Even as an experimental project, SPDY represents a leading candidate for a next-generation application protocol for a faster Web. And with the widespread adoption of SPDY on Chrome and Firefox, the protocol is here to stay,” said NGINX co-founder and author Igor Sysoev. “We’re excited to be the most popular SPDY-enabled Web server, and we’re glad to offer this production-ready version to our loyal user community.”

Developed by Google, SPDY is an open networking protocol used primarily to reduce overall Web page loading time. The SPDY protocol is supported by all major browsers including Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox, and by a variety of client libraries. Automattic, company behind WordPress.com and other major open source-based offerings, sponsored the initial implementation of SPDY in NGINX in 2012, and participated in the recent sponsorship with MaxCDN, representing a joint commitment to the development of open source software.

NGINX is already the Web server of choice for busy, high-performance websites, due to its event-driven architecture and ability to support hundreds of thousands of clients concurrently. The company plans to continue investing in the SPDY protocol as part of its commitment to delivering unmatched performance for mission-critical Internet services.
