NGINX, Inc., the commercial arm of the open source web server project nginx®, today announced that it helped develop the technology for Open Connect, the Netflix content‑delivery initiative.
The work with Netflix included design, implementation, and tuning of the nginx web server software and the underlying operating system as well as product technical support. Support services are the basis of NGINX, Inc.’s commercial offering for companies using its open source web server in mission‑critical applications. NGINX, Inc. announced its support services in February.

Serving more than 26 million streaming members globally, Netflix is the world’s leading Internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows. Netflix has been delivering a billion hours of movies and TV shows per month, constituting petabytes of data, exclusively through commercial content delivery networks. With the goal of a faster, less expensive Internet for all, Netflix recently established Open Connect, its own single‑purpose content delivery network. NGINX, Inc. is backing this unique project to create a fast, scalable, and cost‑efficient solution for streaming video delivery.

The nginx software is a high‑performance edge web server excelling at large scale content delivery and web acceleration. Its precise integration with modern operating system capabilities allows unprecedented levels of efficiency even when running on commodity hardware. The specialized architecture bolsters Open Connect appliances, with the net result of greatly optimized streaming video services, reduced operating costs, and improved quality of viewing experience. Open Connect appliances running nginx already serve about five percent of the Netflix video traffic. According to Netflix, most of its video will eventually be served from Open Connect.
